What is the difference between tropical and sidereal astrology?

Tropical (Western) astrology is tied to the seasons and the March equinox, not the actual star constellations; sidereal astrology on the other hand is anchored to the observable positions of stars in the sky. Roughly 2000 years ago the constellations in the sky matched the seasons. The Sun was in Aries (the first sign of the zodiac) during the spring equinox. But, the stars have changed position since then (today the Sun is in Pisces during the spring equinox). The angular difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiac is currently about 24°. So subtract 24° from your tropical planetary positions and you’ll get the sidereal positions.

Sidereal Lunar Cycle: The Moon takes about 27.3 days to return to the same position relative to the fixed stars. Just as the sun, over the course of a year, traces ever larger arcs from its lowest point in the sky (winter solstice) and rises ever higher until it reaches its highest point (summer solstice), the same is true of the moon. In its monthly orbit around the Earth, it reaches its lowest point when it is positioned in front of the constellation Scorpio. Now, beginning with Sagittarius, it rises for 14 days until it reaches the constellation Taurus. This 14-day phase is called the ascending moon. Now, beginning with Gemini, its orbital arcs become smaller and lower again until it is positioned in front of Scorpio again. This 14-day counter-rotational movement is called the descending moon.
